HISTORY OF PONTARDAWE and DISTRICT by John Henry DAVIES

Out of Ebenezer Chapel Llansamlet, the first branch of the Methodists came to Pontardawe. The first meeting house was established in a thatched cottage in James Street. This house was built by Thomas Williams, the owner of Brynheulog. As the Methodists increased in numbers, it was decided to build a chapel in a more central position. They obtained a suitable site at Trebannws [Trebanos] for a chapel and cemetery on a 999 years lease for a few shillings a year. Tabernacle Chapel and a house under the same roof were built in 1842.

Later Soar Chapel was opened in 1866, the third place in Pontardawe. When the chapel was opened, there were only 40 members but in 1911 there were more than 300.

Many ministers have been here: they were in chronological order: John Edwards, William Morgan, Isaac Morgan and D G Jones. The Rev D G Jones served the chapel well for over 40 years. Owing to the scarcity of ministers, the present one, the Rev Gareth Davies, is the pastor of Soar Pontardawe and Siloh Gwauncaegurwen. [1967]
