YSTALYFERA NOTES
News has now been received by his parents, Mr and Mrs. D. Benjamin Jones, 21 Canal terrace, that their son, Pte. David John Jones, of the S.W.B., died a prisoner of war in Turkey some time in November 1917. The parents had received three post cards from deceased on various dates, but the last came in July 1917, and since then his fate has been quite unknown to them. He went out to Aden and afterwards to India with the Brecknocks at the outbreak of war, and was subsequently transferred to Mesopotamia, and here it was that he was taken prisoner. Before the war he was employed as a miner at Tirbach colliery, and was about 24 years old when he died.
From the Labour Voice newspaper, 15th November 1919 :-
In ever loving memory of Private David John Jones (late of the 4th S W B) and son of Mr and Mrs David Ben Jones Canal Terrace Ystalyfera, who died a prisoner of war in Turkey 1917 14th November.
All is dark within our dwelling,
Lonely is our home today,
For the one who smiled to cheer us
Has forever passed away
Ever remembered by Parents, sisters and companion
